Streptococcus In Dogs: Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments

Streptococcus in dogs is an infection of bacteria that is naturally present in a dog’s body. When a dog with a compromised or underdeveloped immune system gets an infection, the bacteria spreads to new parts of the body and causes sickness.

The condition usually affects very young and very old dogs the most.

If you see signs that your dog might be suffering from a bacterial infection or disease, then you must consult your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and course of treatment. Here’s what you should know about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of streptococcus in dogs.

Symptoms Of Streptococcus In Dogs

Streptococcus in dogs can result in a very wide range of symptoms. Some of the most common general symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Acting lethargic
  • Arthritis
  • Coughing a lot
  • Finding it difficult to swallow food
  • Seeming to be in general pain

Causes Of Streptococcus In Dogs

Streptococcus in dogs occurs when bacteria that is naturally in the dog’s body is able to spread to new areas of the body.

This often affects very young and very old dogs who become sick; the former haven’t yet developed sufficient antibodies to fight off infection, while the latter might have weakened immune systems.

Treatments For Streptococcus In Dogs

If you think that your dog has developed streptococcus, your veterinarian will want to carry out a full physical examination. They’ll order blood and urine tests, along with nose and throat swabs.

In some suspected cases, vets can also use X-rays to examine the abdomen and chest regions.

When the vet confirms their diagnosis, specific treatment will focus on the areas of the dog’s body that have been affected.

In general, vets often use intravenous measures to make sure that the dog stays properly hydrated, while vets often prescribe antibiotics to deal with the infection.

As ever, if your vet prescribes medication for your dog, it is vital that you stick to the recommended frequency and dosage instructions, along with completing the full course of medicine.

Any visible wounds, cuts or lesions on a dog’s body will also receive treatment and proper cleaning by your vet.

Has your dog ever developed streptococcus? What were some of the symptoms that you saw? Tell us all about it in the comments below.
