Masters of Sleeping: Where & How the Wednesday Cats of Catster Snooze

Welcome to the Wednesday Cats of Catster! Every month, we ask our cat-loving Catsters to weigh in on a new topic. This week, we asked them to tell us about their cat’s favorite sleeping places and positions! Here’s what they had to say:

Crystal & Ivy

Hi Catsters!

In some of my previous posts, I’ve touched on the fact that Ivy, like many other cats, LOVES sleeping. Especially sleeping in!

She sleeps in our bed every night and rarely selects the bed as a snoozing spot during the day. We have an entire nightly ritual that goes as follows:

1. At around 10 PM, she’ll get off of her cat tree and join us on her blanket on the couch, which she so graciously lets us use.
2. Once on the blanket, she will get sufficiently comfortable and drift off. The sleeping positions here vary – sometimes, she’s a neat little circle. Other times, she’s a croissant. Rarely, she exposes her little belly and allows us to touch it for a few seconds.
3. 10:30 PM is bedtime for us humans, and of course, she has to join us. My fiance will scoop her up in whichever position she decides to fall asleep in.
4. I will then (very quickly) take her blanket, and make a little nest for her next to my pillow in the bed.
5. The purring parcel is placed into the nest, warm and secure, and is given no less (but sometimes, definitely way more) than 5 goodnight kisses.
6. She will remain in her blanket nest until my fiance gets up for work in the mornings. Then, she’ll get up, receive a well-deserved Biskitty, and return to her nest until it’s time to really get up and face the day.

During the day, she can be found in one of her two cat trees, a sunny spot on the couch, or her Hepper Nest Bed.

Here, the sleeping positions also vary greatly – from the tucked circle to the back-sprawler and the croissant/pretzel. And yes, all of them are adorable, and I have no less than 50 photos of each on my phone because it’s that cute every single time.

Sometimes, when I’m lucky enough, she’ll choose me as her sleeping spot! This never fails to melt my heart. Nothing comes close to being as comforting as a purring kitty on your lap or chest.

What’s your kitty’s favorite snooze spot and/or position?

Until next time, Catsters!

Isabel & Milly

Milly is very fond of sleeping, as most cats are. I envy how much she is able to snooze. She probably clocks in around 10-12 hours a day. Allow me to share with you all some of her interesting and downright adorable sleeping positions.

Some of her (and my) favorites include The Pancake, The Crescent Moon, The Flop, Drop & Roll, The Sphynx, The Stretch ‘n Snooze, The Seal Pup, and my personal favorite, The Rodent.

Let’s rank them!

At #7 we have The Sphynx.

It’s a classic Milly chilling position. She chills so hard sometimes that she falls asleep just like that with her head up and eyes closed. This really does resemble the Great Sphinx of Giza – the Egyptians would have been proud. 8/10.

At #6 we have The Cresent Moon.

Beautiful, mystical, and perfectly round, this is another phenomenal sleeping position. It’s a rare sighting, so when I see it, I really appreciate it. 8.9/10.

Coming in at #5 we have The Stretch ‘n Snooze.

I sometimes don’t realize how long Milly’s little body is until she proceeds to stretch out from head to toe, becoming completely linear. So straight and stretchy, I wish I could stretch like that. 9.5/10.

At #4 we’re looking at The Pancake.

This might be Milly’s favorite sleeping position because it’s a frequent sighting: Milly is as flat as a pancake on the ground. If she tried to go any flatter, she’d become one with the floor and you wouldn’t even be able to see her. I love it. 9.8/10.

In 3rd place, I have to pick The Seal Pup.

Similar to The Sphynx, we have a chilling position that hits so hard, it turns into an impromptu nap. With The Seal Pup, it’s important that the front paws are tucked in so they’re almost completely hidden, and the back paws must resemble a seal tail. When she chills like this, I sometimes completely forget that she’s a cat and not a little seal pup. Magnificent. 10/10.

In 2nd place, we got The Flop, Drop & Roll.

Why? Because she’ll be busy walking from point A to point B, and without any warning, she’ll proceed to aggressively flop down to the floor and nap right there, forgetting all about her journey to wherever she was going. It’s the highlight of my day/ 100/10.

Taking the winning spot in my books is The Rodent.

I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Look at her! 1000/10.

See you next time with more Milly-madness

Wes & Raphael

Raphael is normally a very capable sleeper. Very. He’ll sleep in cars, on trains, in the bedroom, on the floor, when it’s warm, and when it’s cold.

But the other day, it was too bright. That was the last straw.

We were in the bedroom, and as I got up, I realised Raphy wasn’t in his Nest. “How strange,” I thought. “Normally, in the bedroom, he’s either in his Nest, on the bed, or on me and Steph.”

The fear rose in me. “What evil is he getting up to? What dangers await us elsewhere in the flat?”

Then I rounded the door to the bathroom, and just before I turned the light on, there he was, on the floor. In the darkness.

He was lying on the floor, his eyes half open, clearly perturbed by the disturbance of his slumber.

Of course, there was only one thing to do. I kept the light off and left him to sleep peacefully.
